Scalp facials are ideal to relief “workaholic” and menopause symptoms such as tension headaches. While self-care routines often prioritise skincare and beauty, scalp facial offer the extra benefit of relaxation and slowing down. It’s no wonder that they’re becoming increasingly popular.
As a 40+ year old, I know first hand -and head- that peri-menopausal hormonal changes take a toll on my well-being. These changes often manifest as tension headaches, scalp sensitivity, and even hair thinning. I personally find that scalp facials help with maintaining somewhat of a balance.
What Is a Scalp Facial?
A scalp facial is a soothing treatment designed to detoxify, hydrate, and revitalise the skin of your head. The process begins with a deep cleanse to remove buildup and impurities. Then continue with a gentle exfoliation to stimulate circulation and unclog hair follicles. The third and last part of the scalp facial focuses on nourishment.
The highlight of a treatment is the relaxing head massage massage, which targets pressure points in the head and neck to relieve tension and encourage relaxation. Finally, nourishing oils or serums are applied to hydrate the scalp, improving overall comfort and balance.
For a DIY session at home (below more) I mix jojoba oil, almond oil and a few drops of rosemary essential oil.
Scalp Facials as a remedy for menopause symptoms
Due to the hormonal fluctuations that occur during (peri-)menopause, the scalp skin becomes thinner, weakening the skin’s natural protective barriers. This can provide the perfect environment for the overproduction of the dandruff-producing yeast called Malassezia on the scalp.
While dandruff may be unpleasant, headaches can be a serious problem. A scalp facial offers targeted relief.
Here’s why it’s a must-try for women navigating this stage of life:
- Relieves Tension and Headaches: The massage component of a scalp facial targets pressure points. Stimulating these points give effective relief from headaches and help you destress. If you work on a computer a lot, you’ll experience how the head massage reduces the stress carried in the neck and scalp.
- Combats Dryness and Sensitivity: Hormonal shifts can cause the scalp to become dry or irritated. Hydrating treatments used in a scalp facial help soothe sensitivity and restore balance.
- Reduces Stress and Improves Relaxation: The calming massage not only promotes circulation but also triggers the release of endorphins, providing a much-needed moment of relaxation in a busy day.
- Supports Overall Well-Being: The act of focusing on yourself—relieving stress and tension—can have a profound impact on mental clarity and emotional balance during menopause.
Scalp facial a ritual for body, hair and mind
DIY scalp facial for stress and headache relief
You don’t always need to visit a salon to enjoy the benefits of a scalp facial. Creating an at-home routine tailored to stress relief and headache relief can be just as effective. Here’s how:
- Double cleanse: Start with a gentle shampoo to remove buildup. The first time you’ll removes surface dirt, oil, and product buildup. As part of the scalp facial routine, wash your hair a second time to remove residual impurities.
- Exfoliate the scalp: Use a silicone scalp scrubber or a natural scalp exfoliant to stimulate circulation. These don’t need to be expensive. Look for a scrubber that has thicker, soft silicone bristles as these are the best for the massage and won’t damage your hair.
- Scalp facial massage: Spend at least 10 minutes massaging your scalp, focusing on the temples, base of the skull, and crown of the head. Use circular motions to relieve tension.
- Hydrate the scalp: Apply a nourishing scalp oil or serum, massaging it in gently to soothe any dryness. You can use almond oil, jojoba oil or melted coconut butter if you don’t have “scalp oil” at hand.
- Warm towel wrap: Finish by wrapping a warm towel around your head for a few minutes to enhance relaxation and absorption.
